‘A long time ago, when animals could talk, there lived in a forest four wise creatures—a hare, a jackal, an otter and a monkey. They were good friends, and every evening they would sit together in a forest glade to discuss the events of the day…’

Ruskin Bond’s love for the natural world shines brightly in his stories, where animals are not just background figures but vivid characters with personalities, emotions and tales of their own. From mischievous monkeys to loyal dogs, mysterious leopards to curious elephants—Bond’s creatures leap off the page with warmth, humour and sometimes a touch of wildness. Read about the loyalty of Sheroo the dog, or Speedy the crow’s incessant need to annoy Junior Sahib, along with the man-eater in the tunnel that attacks Baldeo.

Bond’s gentle storytelling and keen eye for detail brings depth to these characters, reminding us of the beauty, humour, and the occasional peril that comes from sharing our world with them. After all, sometimes the most extraordinary tales come from the simplest encounters with these unforgettable animals.

Ruskin Bond is known for his signature simplistic and witty writing style. He is the author of several bestselling short stories, novellas, collections, essays and children’s books; and has contributed a number of poems and articles to various magazines and anthologies. At the age of 23, he won the prestigious John Llewellyn Rhys Prize for his first novel, The Room on the Roof. He was also the recipient of the Padma Shri in 1999, Lifetime Achievement Award by the Delhi Government in 2012 and the Padma Bhushan in 2014.

Born in 1934, Ruskin Bond grew up in Jamnagar, Shimla, New Delhi and Dehradun. Apart from three years in the UK, he has spent all his life in India and now lives in Landour, Mussoorie, with his adopted family.
