Born in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Scharda Bail grew up in Mumbai, graduating from St. Xavier's College in 1980. In 1974 she won the First Prize in the Royal Commonwealth Essay Competition for children. She has lectured in Sociology in Mumbai and Chennai, and produced video reports for Doordarshan producers from 1994 to 2000, especially for Siddharth Kak's cultural programme, 'Surabhi', and Pritish Nandy's 'India the Awakening', commemorating fifty years of Indian independence.
