Joy Sengupta

Joy Sengupta is an Indian film and stage actor who has worked extensively in Bollywood cinema, Bengali cinema as well as theatre. He is trained in theatre studies, specializing in acting, under the legendary Ebrahim Alkazi at Living Theatre Academy. He is best known for his debut feature, Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998) directed by the celebrated Govind Nihalani. Joy has acted in over 16 films in Hindi, 18 films in Bengali, and 3 films in English (including an US-UK co-production on the Bhopal Gas Tragedy). Ten of those have received international awards. He has worked as an actor in five web series (including a European series), 25 telefilms, and over 50 ad commercials, along with five radio dramas for BBC Radio 4, including Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy and Shakespeare’s The Two Gentlemen of Verona. He is also known for dubbing for Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America in Marvel Cinematic Universe films in Hindi.

Joy has worked with legendary directors like Habib Tanveer, Safdar Hashmi, M.K. Raina, Barry John, Lillete Dubey, and Feroz Khan. He has also performed globally in West End (London), Off Broadway (New York), Edinburgh Festival Fringe, etc.

Joy was presented the V. Shantaram award for acting in his debut film Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa. He was awarded the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Award for the year 2006, for portraying M.K. Gandhi in the play Sammy.


Joy has donned many caps throughout his journey in the cultural spheres. He was a teacher of theatre in schools across Delhi. He has taught creative communication at management schools. In his own unique style, he has used theatre as a tool for literacy for Literacy Mission. He conducts regular sessions on theatre and cinema appreciation.
