ABOUT THIS BOOK

First published in 1807 as children’s book accompanied with illustrations, Tales from Shakespeare retells twenty of Shakespeare’s timeless play—tragedies and comedies—in prose form. Written by the famous brother and sister duo of the nineteenth-century English literary scene, Charles and Mary Lamb, almost two hundred years after the Shakespearean era, this book revives the wit, drama, emotions and imagination of the Bard’s plays with considerable gusto. While the book retains Shakespeare’s original language wherever possible, it simplifies the plots to a large extent and makes it more accessible to young and first-time readers alike.

AUTHOR OF THE BOOK

Charles Lamb (1775-1834) and Mary Lamb (1764-1847), the inseparable siblings, were bound together for life by the common experience of mental instability, taking care of each other. However, their literary career flourished without blemish and they went on to be recognized as talented writers for generations to come.
