ABOUT THIS BOOK

Why did a regular judgment by the Allahabad High Court result in the imposition of Emergency
across India? How did Sanjay Dutt’s arrest under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention)
Act affect the law’s future? What was the curious turn of events that led to the back and forth
regarding decriminalization of same-sex relationships?
In India, whenever the legislature has resorted to petty politics, the judiciary has always stepped in
to be the nation’s conscience keeper. Passing landmark judgments like the ones against Triple Talaq
and honour killings as well as preserving the citizens’ right to identity and expression, the courts
of India have consistently set a high bar when it comes to putting its citizens first. Raising the Bar
explores some cases and judgments that have shaped the citizenry and the country going forward.
With the cases analysed in detail by one of the country’s foremost lawyers, this book is a must-read
to grasp the legal history of modern India.
