Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell

Margaret Mitchell (1900–1949) was an American writer and journalist born in Atlanta, Georgia. Before devoting herself to fiction, she worked at the Atlanta Journal Sunday Magazine, where her vivid human-interest pieces won a local following. Confined by injuries from a serious accident, she began crafting what would become her only published novel—an epic that forever altered the literary landscape. Although she shunned fame and rarely appeared in public, Mitchell’s sharp wit, meticulous research, and lifelong fascination with Southern history infused her work with authenticity. Beyond her novel, she quietly supported wartime efforts, funding medical scholarships for students during World War II. Mitchell’s untimely death in 1949 ended a remarkable life, yet her creation endures as one of the most iconic and debated works of American fiction.
