ABOUT THIS BOOK

Set in the backdrop of the Civil War, this is the best loved of Marryat’s stories for youngsters. Four heroic children, Edward, Humphrey, Alice and Edith take shelter in the deep forest. Their adventures and efforts to survive in the forest form the core of this novel.

AUTHOR OF THE BOOK

After an adventurous career in the Navy that earned him the Royal Human Society’s Gold Medal for bravery, Frederick Marryat quit the services in 1830 to educate himself in literature. Before his death in 1848, he had written about 20 books, most of them based on his experiences at sea.
